Retainer Gardens

Spring of 2018 I bought steel container garden box sets. I never got the garden planted last year. I am determined to get this done this year. Any pros out there with tips and best quality of dirt to use? I am wondering about the drainage also. Should there be a deep drainage system where the ground is tilled and hollowed before setting the box up and filling with new soil? What Plants should be planted together? The perimeter of container system should have certain plants, to keep insects and other pests at bay. What is the best layout? Okay I do have books and have studied this too, however having comments from people who have actually done the container gardening would be extremely helpful. Saving costly mistakes is always nice. Growing in Central Michigan area. I will research more on the soil. I really want a quality soil without pesticides. I should look at the Old Farmers Almanac for some enlightenment.
